ToggleEvery weather station, drone altimeter and smartphone floor counter depends on a tiny absolute pressure cell that feels the weight of the air above it. This guide explains how that cell works, how its reading becomes altitude and how engineers calibrate it with confidence.
A barometric pressure sensor measures the absolute pressure of the surrounding air, usually in hPa. With the right formula, careful mounting and periodic calibration it reports weather trends, altitude and an atmospheric reference for gauge pressure.

What Is a Barometric Pressure Sensor?
A barometric pressure sensor is an absolute pressure sensor designed to measure the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere, usually between about 300 and 1100 hPa. Unlike a gauge pressure transmitter, it compares the air against a sealed vacuum reference instead of against the atmosphere itself.
Atmospheric pressure at sea level averages 1013.25 hPa in the standard atmosphere and falls as you climb. The difference between the two reference types is explained in absolute vs gauge pressure, and it is the key to understanding why a barometer needs a sealed cavity.

AZoM notes that modern barometric sensors can resolve pressure differences as small as 0.01 hPa. The same article explains that most devices use either a capacitive diaphragm or a piezoresistive bridge, followed by built in temperature compensation.
A change of 1 hPa near sea level corresponds to roughly 8 metres of height. That is why a good barometer chip can tell which floor of a building you are standing on.
Units You Will Meet: hPa, mbar and Friends
Meteorologists use hectopascal, and 1 hPa equals exactly 1 mbar or 100 Pa. Older instruments in India still show mmHg or inHg, so a quick atm to kPa pressure conversion table is handy on any instrument bench.
Aviation in India uses hPa for the altimeter setting called QNH, while many American products still print inHg. Always check the unit before comparing two barometers.
How a MEMS Barometric Pressure Sensor Works Inside
Inside a MEMS barometric pressure sensor sits a thin silicon diaphragm etched over a cavity sealed under vacuum. Air pressure bends the diaphragm, and the bending is sensed either by piezoresistors in a Wheatstone bridge or by a change in capacitance, as compared in piezoresistive vs capacitive pressure sensors.
The tiny bridge signal goes to an on chip amplifier and a high resolution analog to digital converter. The same silicon micromachining is used in the MEMS accelerometer, which is why these parts are so small and cheap.
Silicon is strongly temperature sensitive, so every chip includes a temperature sensor and factory trimming coefficients stored in memory. Your firmware reads raw pressure and temperature, then applies the compensation formula from the datasheet, a correction similar to the thermal zero and span shift handling in industrial transmitters.
Always read the temperature register before the pressure register and use the datasheet compensation code exactly. Skipping the temperature step gives errors of several hPa.
4 Common Sensing Technologies Compared
Implanted resistors on a silicon diaphragm form a bridge.
Diaphragm and fixed plate form a capacitor that changes with pressure.
Pressure changes the frequency of a vibrating silicon beam.
Sealed metal capsule expands and moves a pointer or LVDT.
Industrial transmitters use the same physics on a larger scale, as described in absolute pressure transmitter working principle. Resonant sensors cost much more but hold calibration for years, so national weather networks and calibration labs prefer them.
BMP280 and BMP390: Two Popular Examples
| Parameter | BMP280 | BMP390 |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure range | 300 to 1100 hPa | 300 to 1250 hPa |
| Relative accuracy | ±0.12 hPa, about ±1 m | ±0.03 hPa, about ±0.25 m |
| Absolute accuracy | ±1 hPa | ±0.5 hPa |
| Interfaces | I²C and SPI | I²C up to 3.4 MHz, SPI up to 10 MHz |
| Package | 2.0 × 2.5 mm | 2.0 × 2.0 × 0.75 mm |
Bosch Sensortec states in the BMP390 datasheet that relative accuracy is typically ±3 Pa, equivalent to ±0.25 m of height, between 700 and 1100 hPa. The same datasheet gives an absolute accuracy of typically ±50 Pa and a temperature coefficient of offset of ±0.6 Pa per kelvin.
The BMP390 draws only 3.2 µA at one reading per second in its low power mode, according to Bosch Sensortec. Both chips talk over the buses compared in SPI vs I2C protocol comparison, so any small microcontroller can read them.
The BMP390 package measures only 2.0 by 2.0 by 0.75 mm, yet it contains the diaphragm, vacuum cavity, temperature sensor and complete signal processing chip.
The Barometric Altitude Formula
Because pressure falls with height in a predictable way, the barometric formula of the International Standard Atmosphere converts a pressure reading into altitude. It assumes 15 °C and a temperature lapse rate of 6.5 °C per kilometre in the lower atmosphere.
Sea level pressure: p0 = p ÷ (1 minus h ÷ 44330)^5.255
h in metres, p and p0 in hPa
Example:
p = 950 hPa, p0 = 1013.25 hPa
p ÷ p0 = 0.93758
(0.93758)^(0.19030) = 0.98781
1 minus 0.98781 = 0.01219
h = 44330 × 0.01219 = 540.4 m
Use the local sea level pressure, called QNH, as p0 when you want true height above sea level. If you keep p0 fixed at 1013.25 hPa, a passing weather system will appear as a false change of tens of metres.
Altitude Calculator for a Barometric Pressure Sensor
A negative answer means the measured pressure is higher than p0, which happens in deep mines or when p0 is set too low. The calculator prints that case with the word minus.
Second Worked Example: Sea Level Pressure for a Weather Station
A station in Pune at 560 m reads a station pressure of 950.5 hPa. First compute (1 minus 560 ÷ 44330)^5.255 = 0.98737^5.255 = 0.93538.
Then p0 = 950.5 ÷ 0.93538 = 1016.2 hPa, which is the mean sea level pressure you would compare with a weather chart. Professional meteorological reduction also uses the actual air temperature, so treat this standard atmosphere answer as a good engineering estimate.
Where Barometric Sensors Are Used
In process plants, a barometric pressure sensor often provides the atmospheric reference when an absolute transmitter must report gauge pressure, or the reverse. This matters on vacuum duties explained in vacuum measurement sensor types, where a few hPa of weather change is a large percentage of the reading.
Plants at high altitude face lower ambient pressure all year, which shifts gauge readings and boiling points, as covered in altitude effects on instrumentation. Weather stations often pair the barometer with a capacitive humidity sensor on the same board.
Installation Rules for Reliable Readings
Mount the sensor away from heat sources such as regulators, processors and power resistors, because a warm chip and warm air both bias the reading. Keep the vent hole of the package open to the air but protected from water, dust and direct sunlight.
Enclosures should use a breathable ePTFE vent membrane so that pressure equalises while liquid water stays out. Outdoors, wind blowing across the inlet creates dynamic pressure errors, so weather stations use a static pressure port or a sheltered inlet.
On a PCB, place the barometer away from board edges and mounting screws. Mechanical stress from bending boards and tight screws can shift the offset by several pascals.
7 Simple Calibration Steps for a Barometric Pressure Sensor
The general pressure method is described in how to calibrate a pressure sensor, and a dead weight pressure tester with an absolute bell jar is the classic laboratory standard. Field technicians often use a portable reference barometer and simply compare at ambient pressure.
Every comparison should report its uncertainty, following measurement uncertainty in calibration. A single point offset correction at ambient is usually enough for MEMS parts, because span errors are small compared with offset drift.
- Reference barometer certificate valid and traceable.
- Both devices at the same height, or a height correction applied.
- No heat source or airflow near the sensor.
- Readings taken after stabilisation at each point.
- Offset and span errors within the stated tolerance.
- Corrections saved and verified by a repeat reading.
A height difference of just one metre between the reference and the device gives about 0.12 hPa of difference near sea level. Good laboratories therefore correct for the height of every sensor.
Troubleshooting Barometric Pressure Sensor Problems
- Tiny size and very low power.
- Digital output with built in compensation.
- Resolution good enough to sense one floor of height.
- Low cost for IoT and weather networks.
- Absolute accuracy limited to about ±0.5 to ±1 hPa.
- Sensitive to heat, light, airflow and board stress.
- Altitude depends on weather unless p0 is updated.
- Needs periodic comparison against a reference.
If a reading is stuck near a fixed value, check the bus wiring, pull up resistors and the chip address before suspecting the barometric pressure sensor itself. Steady offsets of a few hPa after assembly usually point to soldering stress or self heating rather than a faulty part, much like the specification limits in the pressure sensor specifications guide.
Noisy altitude values can be smoothed with the oversampling and IIR filter settings inside the chip. Choose the filter to suit the application, since heavy filtering delays the response of a drone altimeter.

Barometric Pressure Sensor FAQ
A barometric pressure sensor measures the absolute pressure of the surrounding air against a sealed vacuum reference. The result is usually reported in hPa or mbar.
Standard sea level pressure is 1013.25 hPa and it falls as altitude increases. Passing weather systems also move the reading of a barometric pressure sensor by several hPa within a single day.
A gauge sensor uses the atmosphere as its reference, so it would always read zero for air. The barometer must compare air with a fixed reference instead.
A vacuum sealed cavity under the diaphragm provides that reference. This is why every barometric chip, from a phone part to a laboratory reference, is built as an absolute pressure cell.
For the BMP390 chip, Bosch Sensortec specifies a relative accuracy of about ±3 Pa, which equals about ±0.25 m of height. Absolute accuracy is typically ±50 Pa over the full range.
Relative accuracy matters for altitude changes and floor counting. Absolute accuracy matters when you compare the reading with a weather service report or a laboratory reference instrument.
The standard atmosphere formula gives h = 44330 × (1 minus (p ÷ p0)^(1 ÷ 5.255)). Here p is the measured pressure and p0 is the sea level pressure.
With 950 hPa and 1013.25 hPa the result is about 540 m. Updating p0 with the local QNH value from the nearest airport removes most of the weather related error.
Many users compare consumer grade parts once a year against a traceable reference barometer. Weather network, aviation or laboratory use often needs a shorter interval set by the quality system.
Review the as found history to set the interval. If the offset barely moves between several consecutive checks, the interval can usually be extended safely and with confidence.
A fully sealed box blocks the outside pressure and also traps air that expands with heat. The sensor would then read the box pressure instead of the atmosphere.
Fit a breathable vent membrane that equalises pressure while keeping water and dust out. Place the vent away from fans and direct wind to avoid dynamic errors.
Common causes are self heating from nearby parts, soldering stress and mechanical bending of the circuit board. Direct sunlight on the vent hole can also disturb some sensors.
Move the part away from heat and stress, then repeat a one point comparison. Store the corrected offset in firmware and verify it with a fresh reading.
