Emerson Launches New PACSystems Safety Controller for Safer and Smarter Automation.

August 20, 2025 Emerson has introduced its latest safety innovation, the PACSystems™ RX3i CPS400 Safety Controller, a powerful yet compact system designed to simplify safety integration and improve reliability in demanding industrial environments.

Emerson PACSystems Safety Controller

Emerson PACSystems Safety Controller is built to meet Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2) requirements and is tailored for applications such as infrastructure, fire and gas detection, burner management systems, and emergency shutdowns. With its scalable design, advanced security features, and built-in communications, the CPS400 provides a modern solution for industries where worker and equipment safety cannot be compromised.

Meeting the Needs of Modern Automation

As industrial projects become increasingly complex and data-driven, equipment manufacturers and system integrators face rising pressure to meet strict safety standards. They must not only protect people and assets but also comply with regulations that demand reliable, certified safety systems.

Emerson designed the PACSystems Safety Controller to address these challenges. With 2,000 available I/O points and a 64-megabyte memory capacity, the controller is powerful enough to handle a wide range of mission-critical applications. Its scalable architecture makes it suitable for both small projects and large, evolving systems.

Built-In Connectivity for Complete Visibility

One of the standout features of the RX3i CPS400 is its ability to connect seamlessly within automation networks. Using standard industrial communication protocols like OPC UA, Ethernet Global Data (EGD), and Modbus TCP, the controller can communicate directly with other devices, higher-level systems, or even peer controllers.

This connectivity ensures operators and engineers have full visibility of system performance, helping them make informed decisions in real time. Whether it’s a single machine or an entire plant, the CPS400 allows smooth data sharing across the operation.

Security at the Core

Cybersecurity is a growing concern in industrial automation, and Emerson has prioritized protection in the CPS400. The controller is a secure-by-design solution that includes Secure Boot® technology and support for the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) standard.

These features safeguard system integrity by preventing unauthorized code or tampering and ensuring data remains accurate and protected. For industries where downtime or data corruption could have serious safety consequences, this level of protection is crucial.

Simplified Certification and Compliance

Developing and certifying safety systems can be time-consuming and expensive. Emerson has streamlined the process by equipping the CPS400 with safety-certified function blocks and pre-configured templates.

These tools help engineers design systems that comply with the IEC 61511 standard, reducing engineering time and making it easier to prove compliance to regulators and inspectors. The result is faster project delivery without compromising safety.

Flexible Configurations for Different Needs

The RX3i CPS400 is available in both simplex (single controller) and redundant (dual controller) configurations. This flexibility allows engineers to choose the right setup for their project’s risk level and reliability requirements.

The system also supports duplex communications using the black channel principle over EGD. This method allows safe, standardized communication between the CPS400 and Emerson’s PACSystems VersaMax™ SafetyNet I/O system, ensuring smooth and reliable data exchange across safety devices.

Importantly, the platform is IEC 61508 safety-certified, which means it has been independently tested to meet SIL2 safety performance requirements.

Easy Development with Familiar Tools

To make adoption straightforward, the PACSystems CPS400 can be configured using Emerson’s PAC Machine Edition (PME) development environment. PME is already widely used by engineers for programming programmable logic controllers (PLCs), operator interfaces, and automation elements.

By using a single, unified toolset, developers can design safety, control, and visualization systems in one place. This integration saves time, reduces training needs, and helps projects achieve faster startup and higher efficiency.

Expanding Emerson’s Safety Portfolio

Emerson sees the CPS400 as a natural addition to its growing safety product line. According to Daniel Smith, senior product manager with Emerson’s discrete automation business, the new controller strengthens Emerson’s ability to provide complete, integrated safety solutions.

“Adding the PACSystems RX3i CPS400 Safety Controller to our extensive portfolio of safety products, we continue to deliver tools users need to create compliant safety systems that are easily developed and integrated into sophisticated automation solutions,” Smith said.

Why Launch of Emerson PACSystems Safety Controller Matters

The introduction of the PACSystems RX3i CPS400 comes at a time when safety and reliability are top priorities across industries. Increasingly strict regulations, combined with the need for digital transformation, mean companies must invest in safety systems that are not only compliant but also flexible, connected, and secure.

With its combination of scalability, cybersecurity, certified templates, and easy integration, the CPS400 positions Emerson as a strong partner for industries such as:

  • Oil and gas – for fire and gas detection and emergency shutdowns
  • Energy and utilities – for reliable control in power generation and distribution
  • Manufacturing – for burner management and machine safety
  • Infrastructure projects – where public and worker safety must be prioritized

By meeting these needs, Emerson helps companies protect workers, avoid costly downtime, and maintain compliance with global standards.

Looking Ahead

As automation technologies continue to evolve, the demand for integrated safety and control solutions will only grow. Systems that once operated separately now need to work together seamlessly, exchanging data securely while maintaining the highest safety levels.

The PACSystems RX3i CPS400 is a clear step in this direction, offering a future-ready platform that can scale with project demands and adapt to changing requirements. With features like secure connectivity, redundant configurations, and user-friendly development tools, Emerson has delivered a product that balances safety, performance, and ease of use.

The launch of the Emerson PACSystems RX3i CPS400 Safety Controller marks an important milestone for industries focused on safety and automation. By combining powerful hardware, scalable design, robust cybersecurity, and simplified compliance, the CPS400 enables organizations to build safety systems that are reliable, secure, and easier to implement.

For engineers, operators, and businesses alike, this new controller provides a practical solution for managing today’s safety challenges while preparing for tomorrow’s demands.

With this release, Emerson reinforces its commitment to helping industries operate more safely, efficiently, and confidently in an increasingly digital world.
